What you may do with the names and the lists: at home, in a classroom, in a book you sell, and where the line is.

Everything on this site is original work. The syllable pools behind every generator, the fifty picked names under each one, the notes beside them and the writing on every page were all produced here, which is what lets the rules below stay this short.

Short version: the names are yours, the lists are ours. Take any name you generate and do whatever you want with it, including selling the thing you put it in. What you may not do is copy the pages themselves.

You may, for free

  • Use any generated name for a character, a pet, a team, a guild, a username, a town, a ship or anything else, in private or in public.
  • Use a generated name commercially. Publish the novel, sell the game, print the shirts, run the stream. No permission needed, no credit required, no fee.
  • Use the generators in a classroom, a writing workshop, a library session or a club, with as many students or players as you like, on a projector or on their own devices.
  • Quote a handful of names from a list in a blog post, a video or a lesson, alongside a link to the page you took them from.
  • Link to any page here from anywhere. No permission needed and no attribution required for a link.

You may not

  • Copy a whole curated list, or a substantial part of one, onto another site, an app or a printed product.
  • Scrape the generators or the name endpoint to build your own generator, dataset or app.
  • Republish the page copy, the notes beside the names or the syllable pools, in any language, including translated or rewritten by a machine.
  • Present this site, or anything on it, as your own work.

Attribution

Never required for a name. A generated name is a word: use it freely and say nothing about where it came from. If you quote one of the curated lists in a post or a video, a link back to the page is appreciated, but it is optional.

Why the line sits there

Not to be difficult. The names are free because a name is not something anyone should have to pay for, and the only thing that keeps the lists worth writing is that they stay on the pages they were written for. Copy the pages and the generators stop being worth building.

Questions about a specific use

If your plan is not obviously covered above, a printed anthology of names, a bundled resource pack, anything at scale, ask on the Contact page. The answer is usually yes and it costs nothing, but it needs to be asked.
